Why is securing cargo for transport crucial?
International transport is a process in which goods are exposed to a range of external factors – moisture, UV radiation, dirt, fluctuating temperatures, as well as mechanical damage. Whether the cargo is travelling by ship across the ocean or flying by plane to another continent, it is crucial that it is properly secured.
One of the most effective methods is shrink-wrapped export packaging. This is a technology that allows you to create a tight, strong and resistant film around the cargo, adapting perfectly to its shape. This ensures that the goods remain safe both during transport and during long-term storage in ports or warehouses.
What is shrink wrap?
Shrink film is a special polyethylene material that shrinks when exposed to high temperatures, tightly wrapping the load. The process is as follows:
- The goods shall be placed on a pallet or a platform
- The whole thing is shrink-wrapped.
- Using hot air heaters, the film shrinks to form an airtight seal.
The end result resembles an airtight ‘vacuum pack’ on a large scale – the film adheres perfectly to the load, leaving no gaps through which contaminants or moisture could enter.
Protection against moisture and UV radiation
The greatest advantage of heat-shrinkable film is its resistance to moisture and atmospheric agents. The airtight protection limits the cargo’s contact with water, which is particularly important in maritime transport, where air salinity and condensation pose a serious threat.
In addition, the shrink film protects against UV radiation, which could damage the cargo surface or accelerate the corrosion process. This makes this method widely used to protect cargo stored in open port yards and loading areas.
Securing fragile and heavy loads
Shrink wrap packaging works well for small, delicate loads as well as for bulky goods. In practice, this means that it can be used to secure:
- industrial machinery and equipment,
- production lines and construction modules,
- steel and metal components exposed to corrosion,
- vehicles and heavy equipment,
- exhibits and trade fair equipment.
The material’s flexibility and ability to conform to any shape make shrink film one of the most versatile methods of export packaging.
Industries using shrink film packaging
This method is most commonly used:
- machinery industry – protection of machinery and process lines,
- Construction – transport of prefabricated elements, steel modules, structural components,
- automotive sector – vehicles, spare parts, bodies,
- trade fair and event logistics – securing stands, displays, exhibition structures,
- power industry – generators, transformers and other equipment requiring protection from moisture.
How long does the shrink film protect the load?
Properly applied shrink film can protect goods for up to several months. In practice, this means that the shrink-wrapped cargo can be safely stored in the port or yard for many weeks without the risk of damage from moisture or dirt.
For even better protection, the following are additionally used: VCI films with corrosion inhibitors, moisture absorbers or anti-slip primers. In this way, the protection period can be extended to up to two years.
Does shrink-wrap export packaging pay off?
The cost of shrink-wrapping depends on the size of the load, the thickness of the film and additional protection. Compared to wooden crates or plywood, it is a cheaper and quicker solution, especially for large loads that only need protection from the outside elements.
For many exporters, it is a compromise between full protection and cost minimisation – shrink film guarantees adequate protection while reducing packaging expenses.

Ecology and recycling of shrink film
Shrink film is made from recyclable polyethylene. After use, it can be recycled into pellets used in the manufacture of further plastic products.
Although it is not a biodegradable material, its environmental record is improved by the fact that it reduces the use of wood in the manufacture of transport boxes. In many cases, choosing foil over heavy wood packaging means less consumption of natural resources and a lower carbon footprint for transport.
