Packaging for sea transport of oil tanks and systems

We carried out an advanced project for the export packaging of oil tanks and systems for sea transport. The task required comprehensive security solutions to guarantee the safety of the valuable cargo during transport by barge and then by ship. As export packaging experts with more than 30 years’ experience, we ensured the highest level of protection using advanced technology and top-quality materials.

Description of the implementation of the order:

Needs analysis and security design

The first stage of implementation was to carry out a detailed analysis of the dimensions, weight and specifics of the oil tanks and systems. Due to the planned sea transport, it was necessary to design solutions that would provide protection against moisture, corrosion and mechanical damage. Danpol’s experts developed a comprehensive plan for packing and securing the cargo, taking into account all the potential risks involved in sea transport.

Construction of the wooden bed

Based on the analysis, specialised wooden platforms and beds were designed and manufactured to form the basis of the tank’s containment structure. They were made from high quality IPPC-certified timber in accordance with international phytosanitary standards, which is crucial for shipping by sea. The bed structure was designed to distribute the weight evenly, minimising the risk of damage during loading onto the barge and vessel.

Multi-layer corrosion and moisture protection

The tanks and oil systems were protected with a multi-layer protection system. First, the components were wrapped in bubble film, which provided basic protection against mechanical damage. Next, a specialised VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) anti-corrosion film from the American brand ZERUST/EXCOR was applied, which, thanks to volatile corrosion inhibitors, forms an invisible protective layer on the metal surface, effectively preventing the formation of rust.

For added protection against moisture, professional moisture absorbers have been placed inside the packaging and VCI corrosion protection capsules have been installed to provide long-lasting protection even in the extreme conditions of shipping. These additional protections are particularly important for oil systems, which are sensitive to corrosion and can be damaged by high humidity.

Vacuum packaging in ALU barrier film

The next step was to use an advanced vacuum packaging method using ALU barrier film. This technology ensures the cargo is hermetically sealed, eliminating the ingress of air and moisture, which is crucial during sea transport. The ALU barrier film provides excellent protection against extreme weather conditions, temperature fluctuations and contaminants that can occur during prolonged sea transport.

Design and construction of the transport box

For maximum protection, dedicated wooden plywood transport crates were designed and manufactured. The crates were adapted to the dimensions and specific characteristics of the cargo, taking into account the requirements for rapid transhipment to barges and ships. The structure of the crates has been reinforced to withstand the loads encountered during sea transport.

Marking and securing of cargo

Professional transport markings, in line with international standards, have been applied to each transport box, making it easy to identify the cargo and informing of the correct handling during transhipment. The tanks, including the bed, have been securely fastened to the ground with certified Cordlash straps, which guarantee high strength and safety during sea transport.

Additional elements were also used to immobilise the cargo inside the box to prevent shifting when the ship swayed. All the materials used to secure the cargo had the appropriate approvals and certificates, guaranteeing their highest quality and effectiveness.

Quality control and preparation for transport

The final stage of the implementation was to carry out a detailed quality control check of all the security features used. Danpol specialists checked the correctness of each packaging element, the stability of the fixings and the tightness of the vacuum packaging. As a result, the cargo was fully prepared for safe sea transport, in compliance with all international standards and safety norms.
