Corrosion as the biggest threat to metal loads
Corrosion is one of the most serious problems in international transport. Metal goods – from machine parts to tools to large industrial equipment – are particularly prone to rusting during sea transport and long-term storage. All it takes is contact with damp, salty air for the surface to begin to oxidise, leading to financial losses and claims.
The solution is VCI export packaging. This is a modern method of corrosion protection that uses vapour inhibitors (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors). These create an invisible protective barrier around the cargo, preventing rust from forming even during months of transport and storage.

How does the VCI film work?
VCI film is a special polyethylene material saturated with corrosion inhibitors. When wrapped around the load, the film releases inhibitor molecules that are deposited on the metal surface. They form an invisible protective layer that blocks the reaction of iron with oxygen and water.
The main advantages of VCI film are:
- protection without physical contact – no need for lubricants or preservative oils,
- no cleaning necessary – once the foil is removed, the product is ready for use,
- long-lasting effect – protection for up to 24 months,
- economy – lower costs than traditional corrosion protection methods.
Application of VCI films in export transport
VCI film is used in many industries, particularly where metal components are transported. Typical applications include:
- parts of industrial machinery and equipment,
- steel tools and components,
- bearings, shafts, precision components,
- structural components in steel and cast iron,
- machines and production lines as a whole or in modules.
In maritime transport, VCI films are often combined with wooden crates and additional protection – moisture absorbers or separation mats. This combination provides maximum protection against corrosion, even in harsh climatic conditions.

How long does the VCI film protect the load?
The duration of protection depends on transport and storage conditions. Under typical storage conditions, VCI film provides protection for 12-24 months. In sea transport, where moisture and salinity are higher, this time may be shorter, but in combination with other protections (dehumidifiers, barrier films, crates) the goods remain fully safe for the entire journey.

Costs – investment in protection against losses
VCI wrapping is less expensive than using traditional corrosion inhibitors, such as lubricants or protective coatings, which require additional cleaning before use.
The cost of VCI film is higher than standard shrink film, but the savings come from not having to maintain and degrease the goods after transport. In practice, this means lower logistics costs and faster deployment of the goods into production after delivery.

VCI film versus other protection methods
Various methods of corrosion protection are used in logistics. Compared to these, VCI film has several significant advantages:
- unlike greases and oils, it does not require cleaning,
- is easy to apply,
- allows goods to be quickly prepared for transport,
- does not interfere with the metal surface.
It is therefore particularly favoured by large-scale exporters who need to combine effective protection with speed.
Ecology and recycling of VCI films
VCI film is made from recyclable polyethylene. Although it contains chemical additives in the form of inhibitors, their amount is small and does not prevent the recovery of the raw material.
Furthermore, this method reduces the use of lubricants and preservatives, which are more burdensome for the environment and require additional cleaning processes. Thus, VCI film is a more environmentally friendly solution than traditional corrosion protection measures.
