Pallet extensions – a flexible solution for logistics and storage
A simple accessory that changes the possibilities of the palette
The wooden pallet is the foundation of transport and storage. However, in many situations, the platform alone is not enough – the goods require additional protection against shifting, tipping or mechanical damage. Instead of building a box from scratch, more and more companies are opting for pallet extensions – practical, folding frames attached to standard pallets.
This solution makes it easy to convert an ordinary pallet into a fully-fledged transport box. Thanks to their modular design, the extensions increase the functionality of pallets, improve the safety of transported loads and facilitate space management in the warehouse.
What are pallet extensions and how do they work?
Pallet extensions are wooden frames made of boards joined by steel hinges. They are mounted on a standard pallet (e.g. EURO 1200 × 800 mm) and their height can be adjusted by adding additional layers.
Key features of pallet extensions:
- versatility – fits most standard pallets,
- modularity – several frames can be superimposed, increasing the load height,
- Foldable design – makes it easy to store when not in use,
- easy to assemble and dismantle – the frames are attached without the use of additional tools.
In practice, this means that a single pallet can be transformed into a high-wall container tailored to the needs of the load in a matter of minutes.
Pallet collars applications in transport and storage
Pallet extensions work well in many industries and situations:
- transporting fragile products – glass, ceramics, electronic components,
- storage of small components – screws, spare parts, components,
- export of goods – container height can be quickly adjusted,
- internal logistics – transporting goods between production lines,
- Food and agriculture industry – transport of fruit, vegetables, bulk packaged goods.
Their versatility makes the extensions an invaluable tool in dynamically changing logistics processes.
Protection of large and unusual loads
The pallet extensions allow both small and large items to be secured. Thanks to their adjustable height, they can be used for transporting:
- machine components and building blocks,
- tools and spare parts,
- non-standard modules and industrial components,
- irregularly shaped goods that could easily fall off the pallet.
In export transport, extensions are often used as an intermediate solution – the cargo is secured with frames and then additionally wrapped with stretch film or shrink film.

Industries using pallet extensions
Pallet extensions are most commonly used:
- machinery industry – parts and modules requiring stabilisation,
- automotive industry – small components and spare parts,
- contract logistics – a variety of customer goods on one pallet,
- Trade and distribution – FMCG products, consumer packaged goods,
- Agriculture and food – bulk products, fruit, vegetables.
The economics of using pallet extensions
Although pallet extensions require an initial investment, they are an economical solution in the long term. This is due to their:
- multiple use – can be used hundreds of times,
- storage – they take up little space in the warehouse,
- modularity – one pallet and several frames replace multiple boxes of different heights.
In this way, companies reduce packaging purchasing costs and optimise warehouse logistics.
Ecology and recycling of pallet extensions
The extensions are made of wood, which can be recycled at the end of its life cycle. Steel hinges can be re-melted and entire frames can be repaired and recirculated.
Their reusability makes them an environmentally friendly solution – unlike disposable packaging, which quickly ends up in the waste stream.
